Pick something that you are passionate about, and write about it.
Or, do your civic duty, and learn and write about politics and government.
If you choose to do the latter, don't look where everybody else is looking. Too many bloggers put their own spin on the news that everybody knows. Instead, dig - really dig - and look where no one else is looking. And, make sure you put in facts that your reader may not know. Anyone can rant, and many people do.
Which brings me back to your original statement:
"I have ABSOLUTELY no idea what I'm doing..."
That qualifies you to have a POPULAR blog, and I wouldn't wish that on anyone. ;)
